My Preferred Learning Styles: Print Learner, Kinesthetic Learner, and Olfactory Learner.
1. A Print Learner – refers to seeing printed or written words
As a Print oriented Learner, I learn best with reading and writing. Reading materials such as books, magazines, or any article help me understand better any subject matter. I do a lot of writing, jotting down and highlighting some important event/data for me to recall. It’s my easy way of reviewing, for me it’s like familiarizing words and deep process information soon it will retain in my Long Term Memory (Information Processing Theories).
For me to me to become more effective and consistent in learning, I would like to incorporate visuals with printing for me to be able to appreciate more the subject matter. It will justify my views and create inspiration, not only to me but also to the readers. It keeps me motivated with the idea of putting print and visuals together thus making it easy for me to learn, to understand and to convey my thoughts.
In doing some of my postings, you will notice that I am inserting pictures, illustrations and clip art. Since I am in a preschool environment, I somehow adapted the colors, wonders, fun learning and teaching kids. Aside from the fact that it will catch other reader’s attention, I want everyone the see the joy of teaching small kids with all the pain and pleasure. Pain is that, when they run, I have to run after them, when they cry I have to stop them by carrying, bringing him on the playground, pretending to be a clown or someone funny, when they are sick, vomited, makes a “pee “,I have to attend more to him/her, the Pleasure, well, saying “Thank you, we appreciate you, my daughter loves you more than me”, as parents are saying, are more than encouraging words plus kids are hugging, giving flowers, it’s an award!
2. Kinesthetic and Haptic Learner – refers to the whole body movement and to sense of touch.
It is said that a “physical learner is someone who likes sports and exercise”, well unfortunately this is not me. But when I read that “physical learner is more sensitive to the physical world,” yes partly it describes my personality being outgoing. Physical learner also uses hand gestures and other body movements to communicate. Some movements that goes with physical learner are dancing, going out on them park and enjoying physical action with rides, gardening (something that uses more of hands) and playing a jigsaw, writing and drawing. Since kinesthetic and haptic learning both deals with movements, I try to correlate them with each other.
Relating at my present work, the best movement that applies in me is that going out on theme parks or amusement center to enjoy rides, because we always see to it that we conduct educational field trip and this requires a lot of walking here and there, guiding the kids on which ride is right for their age and height, and instructing them how to behave as well.
Writing, it means the way I’m jotting down creates hand movement as well. As I discussed on my 1st learning style, uses of highlighter and pens goes with the movements.
Dancing skills, yes, when we do school presentations, and I choreograph some dances for our students. They also learn body rhythm, timing and enhances their musical /dancing talents. More importantly, proper coordination of their hands, feet and body is being guided as well.
For me to become effective learner in terms of physical movements, I think it is best for me to integrate this style inside our classroom by doing hands on activities like doing floor puzzle together with my students, creating shapes with play dough, and doing paintings and drawings. With these kinds of activities, my students and I will develop hand-eyes coordination; will also help improve our memory skills. While in painting and drawing will benefits kids in expressing creative thoughts.
3. Olfactory Learner – refers to sense and smell
In this kind of my learning style it is said that” we associate what we learn with any particular smell or taste.” According to research that brain indicates that smell originates in the most primitive part of the brain and that is a powerful reminder of people or past events. Since I am not into medical theories, I did some readings first about this learning style. First, the olfactory nerve is located close to amygdala (part of the brain) that is connected to the emotional memory and experience emotion. Then the olfactory nerve is close to hippocampus(also part of the brain) associated with memory. And the actual ability to smell is linked to memory. In other words, the ability to identify smell is lessened if the area of brain connected to memory is damaged. Cognitive problems and memory loss are some of the changes of brain malfunction.
Therefore, maintaining a healthy brain with a healthy lifestyle will help me accommodate lifelong learning. Stimulating my brain by interacting with others, have fun, take a good sleep so that my brain can think at full capacity. Lastly that I am always doing is that , playing around with kids, laugh with them and learn from them!
